zagreb croatia

We arrived in zagreb after a long flight through ny and zurich, but no time to sample things along the way. We are staying in a hostel in ravnice, since my two sons have soccer training with a local academy here. It is our first time in a hostel, it was quaint, had a kitchen which allowed us to prepare our own meals. It is owned by Vera and her daughter Lea also helps out with day to day operations. Lea’s grandmother can be found doing laundry or just hanging out watching television in the common room on the ground level. It’s truly a family affair. Vera and Lea both speak excellent English and love hearing about travel stories and believe it or not, I had a couple fun conversations with Grandma despite the fact that she doesn’t speak a word of English. Smiling and nodding goes a long way. ravnice hostel we were able to sample different beers there either from the local grocery or the many restaurants in the area. Karlovačko it is light a golden color with a slight however refreshing bitter taste, it is 5.4% in alcohol. Ožujsko is a lager that is light in color and mild in flavor a good refreshing beer in the heat. Pan is a lager also, again light in color and mild in flavor. Velebitsko pivo is a pale lager with alcohol content of 5.1% and their dark lager has a alcohol content of 6.1%. Both were good however the dark beer was very good on a cool rainy day. We enjoyed this beer at Klincek the local sports pub that is adjacent to the training facility for the boys. Klincek Thats all for now…

How do American Beers compare to the rest of the world?

The USA has had such a great revival of beers in the past 25-35 years yet most of them think only the very pale-straw beers are available. The fact is we have a much better beer offering than any country other than perhaps Belgium. My name is James Street and I was at a pub over in cobham enjoying a pint of boddingtons when I heard that statement made by an american. I decided to make it a quest to see if that was true. I have tried enough of the american selections and was impressed by their offerings, however I enjoy a good chimay  or a czech pilsner also. We spent time in asheville nc on a nice spring evening comparing belgium beers to their american counterparts and were equally impressed. So lets begin our adventure in search of good food & drink and i will be glad to try and share with anyone out there. Cheers!
